Zapora na Łomnicy
Łomnica is one of the wildest and most dangerous rivers in the Karkonosze Mountains. In the upper section, its average water gradient is 72 per mille, while in the lower section it is seven times lower. Already in the Middle Ages, the riverbed and valley were traversed by Walloons in search of gold and precious stones.
Łomnica is very capricious and treacherous. During the flood in 1897, it destroyed many houses, roads, farms, and a railway line. As part of the Prussian large flood control program, between 1910 and 1915, the riverbed was regulated in many sections. At that time, debris dams were also built to retain materials carried by the swollen waters. The effectiveness of the system was confirmed during the "Millennium Flood" in 1997.
The dam crest is 105 m long. It created a small reservoir lake, and the excess water flows down picturesque cascades.
